Our 2004 Tree of Lights ceremony took place the evening of December 1, 2004. While putting the lights on the tree, volunteer Raymond Tomczak, Jr. discovered that the wire barrier had failed to completely deter eager beavers in search of a snack, but the white and red lights twinkling in the dark still looked pretty when he threw the switch. A Woodwind Ensemble from the Culpeper County High School band played carols before and during the celebration, and the Culpeper-Fauquier madrigal group Camerata Cantores sang holiday songs during the program (with their excellent harmonies only occasionally accompanied - by kazoo). Afterwards, the staff, volunteers, and others who had gathered for the ceremony enjoyed hot drinks and cookies.
Lights on each year's tree are sponsored in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone still living (including organizations such as physicians, local fire and rescue, or family members). Light sponsorships are $10 each. Lights in memory of someone are white, those honoring someone are red. The lights remain lit throughout the holiday season.
Volunteer Coordinator Ruth Pavlik organized the 2004 event with the help of many volunteers and staff members, with special thanks to:
- Duane Clore, Director of Bands, Culpeper County High School
- Ladies Auxiliary of the John J. Cempré Council Knights of Columbus (for baking cookies)
- Janice Chick, Kathy Clements, Ann Frazier, Hilary Parker, Essie Rossi, Frank Quarto, and Ray Tomczak (for help with setup and cleanup)
- Ray Tomczak, Jr. (for decorating and lighting the tree)
- Bonnie Vermillion (for reading the poem)
- Rev. Liz Danielsen (for delivering the message)
